When James Cook came up what is now the Cook Inlet in 1778 in search of a Northwest passage to the Atlantic, Russian fur trappers had aready started to settle in the area. The city of Anchorage itself was founded in 1915 as a tent city for workers on the Alaska Railroad. Later, during the 30's, hopefuls fleeing the Great Depression came pouring in from the Lower 48 states. Later, World War II and the construction of the Alaska Highway further boosted the city's size and importance.

The opening of Anchorage International Airport in 1951 solidified Anchorage's place as the transportation center of Alaska, and brought travelers from around the world, as Anchorage is halfway between New York and Tokyo, and became a popular stop for international flights before the development of aircraft that could cross the Pacific without stopping.

For sports fans, nothing can top the uniqueness of The Iditarod. This world famous sled dog race is the longest and most famous in the world, and kicks off every year on the third saturday in March right in downtown Anchorage. Hockey fans can catch a game featuring the Alaska Aces of the ECHL. Additionally, Anchorage was a candidate for the Winter Olympics in 1992 and 1994.
