On the border on Mexico, Nogales is the southern terminus of Interstate 19. Being the twin city to Sonora Mexico's Nogales just across the border, the name Nogales means "Walnuts" in Spanish, reflecting the abundance of walnut trees that once grew abundantly in the mountain pass between the two towns named Nogales. Founded in 1842 by the Elias family from a land grant given to them by the Mexican government, Nogales was further established in 1880 when Jacob Isaacson built a trading post, and in 1883 when the first US Post Office was opened.

The economy of Nogales is largely based on agriculture, namely produce. Despite the small size of Nogales, much of the economy is driven by patronage from neighboring Nogales, Sonora, which has a population of over 300,000.
